Please ensure that your Trainee takes their full annual leave entitlement whilst in your Practice.  Payment of outstanding annual leave at the time of leaving NES will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and only with the approval of the Director of Postgraduate GP Education.  Annual leave cannot be carried forward to their new Employer. There is no need to send the annual leave record to NES.  Forms on the extranet requiring a Line Manager signature e.g. Annual leave log sheet, absence reporting etc, should be signed off by a Training Practice Representative.

For trainees who are out of sync, please use the AL calculator to calculate the annual leave entitlement for a specific period of time.

As per the NHS Circular PCS(DD) 2021/01 there has been a change to your terms and conditions in relation to your annual leave and public holiday arrangements.

Your annual leave entitlement will increase by 3 days per year, while your public holiday entitlement will reduce by 2 days, from 10 to 8 public holidays per year.

The change will increase the annual leave entitlement to 6.6 weeks (33 days) for those grades previously entitles to 6 weeks’ leave, and to 5.6 weeks (28 days) for those previously entitled to 5 weeks’ leave.

The changes outlined in the circular will be applied to less than full time employees on a pro-rata basis.

It is likely that most GP Practices will continue to have 10 public holidays per year agreed locally.

You should use your public holiday entitlement to cover any public holidays within your GP Practice. However, where your GP Practice is closed to accommodate an additional 2 days public holiday, you are encouraged to keep a couple of annual leave days to cover these.

GP Practices have been asked to inform all new trainees to the Practice with the public holidays due to arise throughout their placement, at the start of the placement to allow you plenty of notice to plan your leave.

If you have used all of your annual leave and public holiday entitlements, and your GP Practice is due to be closed for a public holiday, you will be required to take unpaid leave to cover the day.

If you have any questions regarding the new public holiday and annual leave arrangements, please contact the relevant Placement Board or NES HR by raising a ticket at https://nesdigital.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/30
