What is the process for requesting parental leave?

Should you wish to apply for parental leave, you should firstly apply to your educational supervisor/line manager in writing at least 21 days before you wish to comment parental leave using the parental leave application form.

When submitting the application, you should also provide appropriate documentation e.g. the original birth certificate for whom you are applying for parental leave, adoption papers or in the case of a disabled child, the award of disability living allowance for the child. If you are applying for parental leave around the time of the birth of your child, you will be required to produce a copy of the MAT B1 certificate.

All applications will be considered and discussed between you and your supervisor to ensure the request meets the needs of the service. Please remember to contact the Deanery team to discuss any potential training implications.

If you are a doctor in training in a practice placement, your form should be forwarded to the NES Trainee Services Team at https://nesdigital.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/30. If you are a doctor in training in a hospital placement, your form should be forwarded to your placement board HR team.

If a trainee has requested unpaid parental leave, a notification of change form should be processed by the placement board through Turas People for payroll. The placement board should ensure parental leave is recorded through SSTS or a leave form if they are not using SSTS (this can be found here).
